Portable Trenchers
Portable trenchers are similar to chain-blade or wheel trenchers but are smaller and designed with easy transport in mind. For the purpose of installing landscape edging and irrigation lines, the landscapers and lawn care specialists commonly use these type of trenchers. These trenchers are also used for excavating sprinkler, lighting, or water lines, and allow much greater precision than a shovel or other manual force — usually with a lot less effort. Portable trenchers are light in weight (approximately 200 pounds) in order to stay portable and are very user friendly and smooth while compared to other trenchers.
This type of trench equipment generally uses a boring system for digging and can be operated while walking(Walk Behind). These machines can typically dig trenches that are up to about 30 inches (76.2 cm) deep and 2 to 6 inches (5.08 to 15.24 cm) wide.
The cutting implement may be a chain or a blade similar to a rotary lawn mower blade oriented so that it rotates in a vertical plane.
Some portable trenchers use a lawnmower-like blade instead of a chain-blade or cutting wheel, using the spinning blade not only to cut into the soil but also to widen the trench and cast dirt out of it.
